Ohio Sports Betting Update: Four More Operators Seek Online Licenses
Arizona passed its own sports betting bill in April 2021, allowing online betting and some of the nation’s first in-field sports books. It is fast becoming one of the most popular places to bet.
The first online sportsbooks launched on September 9, the first day of the 2021 NFL season. Eighteen operators, including BetMGM, Caesars, and FanDuel, now operate in Arizona, with room for two more.
In March 2022, Arizona entered the top 10 states in monthly activity (betting revenue) for the first time.
Earlier this month, FanDevil began hosting at Footprint Center, home of the Phoenix Suns and Mercury, while Caesars opened its sportsbook at Chase Field, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

BetMGM is working on a similar project at State Farm Stadium, home of the Arizona Cardinals, while DraftKings is expected to launch a casino at the Scottsdale golf course that hosts the Waste Management Open.
On February 22, 2022, the Arkansas Joint Budget Committee finalized rules to introduce online gambling, which exceeds in-person performance at three casinos, as it was limited beginning in 2019.
The first online gaming book went live on March 5 – a partnership between Delaware North’s online gambling site, Southland Casino and Betly. BetSaracen, a product of Saracen Casino, was launched a month later and is so far the only other online app in the region.
Arkansas law allows eight online sportsbooks, but so far national brands such as DraftKings and FanDevil have been reluctant to join. To do this they have to partner with one of the three state casinos and split 51% of their money with them.
More Online Sports Betting Operators Could Get Licensed In Virginia
Colorado took its first online and retail bets in May 2020, six months after voters approved sports betting during the November election.
Colorado has since become one of the nation’s strongest markets with 26 different apps, including DraftKings, FanDuel and BetMGM.
It was one of the first regions in the party to record more than $200 million in monthly betting and in 2022 it was among the top six regions in betting dollars ever.
Online sports books must partner with one of Colorado’s 33 casinos to operate legally in the state, leaving the door open for other apps to come.
Micro Betting Will Change Sports, But Tech Challenges Remain
Colorado has one of the most consumer-friendly setups in the nation, although lawmakers have begun to tighten some of the lesser tax loopholes.
Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont signed an agreement in May 2021 with the Shantucket Pequot and Mohegan tribes, allowing both, along with the state lottery, to conduct online sports betting.
Those developers were quickly joined by DraftKings, FanDuel and PlaySugarHouse, all of which went online on October 19 – just weeks after Connecticut began betting.
The in-person sports books each have a casino, while the state lottery and Rush Street Interactive (which owns PlaySugarHouse) operate seven retail locations. They can open up to 15 under national law.
Florida Sports Betting: Launch Delayed Pending Court Rules
A small place, and new to the party, Connecticut’s market still has a ways to go. It will be interesting to see how New York’s recent opening affects its numbers, though it should continue to benefit from Massachusetts’ inability to legalize.
Delaware became the first state outside of Nevada to legalize single-game betting on June 5, 2018, beating out New Jersey just weeks after a Supreme Court ruling upended the industry.
Delaware’s lottery-operated sports betting market still bans online betting, leaving just three retail sportsbooks in the state — and a surprising number of revenues.
Its small size, population and abundance of betting options for digital games among its neighboring states give Delaware relative importance despite its fast start.
National Football League
Hard Rock hosts the first and only legal online sports betting in Florida from November to December 2021.
Now, online betting has ground to a halt in the Sunshine State after a federal judge threw out an agreement that gave the Seminole Tribe full control of the market. This agreement, confirmed by the government. Ron Desantis, fired after a judge ordered him to violate federal and state laws.
The D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals heard oral arguments in the Florida sports betting case in December 2022, with a decision expected in 2023.

One of the most populous (and sports-crazy) states, Illinois ranks among the top five states in terms of earnings (dollar terms) and tax rate.
A major hurdle was removed on March 5, 2022 when the individual registration policy, which had been suspended month-to-month during the pandemic, ended permanently.
Where Is Sports Betting Legal? Screenings For All 50 States
Gambling was legalized at public colleges in December 2021, although gamblers can only do so in person.
Indiana began online sports betting in October. 3, 2019, just one month after his first personal bet.
Indiana – the 13th state to legalize sports betting – has fared well since Governor Eric Holcomb signed a bill to legalize it in May 2019. It has generated more than $7 billion in gambling-related revenue, the fifth-highest of any state.
